        a) Forms of communication and its importance (verbal, non-verbal)

        - Define the terms verbal and non-verbal communication.

        - When do we use signs, gestures and body language (yawning, kissing, hugging…)?

        - Describe some gestures which are typical for your mother tongue.

        - Name some symbols and explain their meaning, e. g. a dove, an eagle.

        - When and why do people smile? Explain.

         

        b) Communication in various situations (in public and privacy, among the young, between the young and the old, at school, in the family, everyday life vs. special occasions)

        - Do you speak the same way to adults as you do to your peers? Describe how the „languages“ are different. What differences do you see in how different age groups communicate among themselves?

        - Compare the language of presentation with that of everyday speech.

        - What languages do we use in different situations, e. g. emergencies, emotional situations, when we are in trouble, etc.? (orders, questions, requests, advice, explanation)

        - What are the basic differences between formal and informal English? What language is used in families?

        - Explain the terms “mother tongue”, “second language”, “foreign language”.

        - Why is a speaking foreign language becoming more and more important nowadays?

        - What do you consider the most difficult aspects of English? (e. g. idioms…)

        - How would you like to improve your English? Which skill would you like to improve most?

         

        c) Modern forms of communication (mobile phones, computers – e-mail, the Internet)

        - How has the way of communication changed over years? Compare modern forms of communication with the older ones.

        - Many people think that modern methods of communication are too impersonal. What do you think?

        - Explain the pros and cons of e-mail communication. How does the Internet influence human relationships? Have you ever made friends through the Internet? Describe the friendship.

        - A lot of people say that modern ways of communication have stopped face-to-face contact. What do you think?

        - How often do you call your friends? How much time a week do you spend speaking on the phone just chatting?

         

        Writing suggestions:

        A letter of apology (180 – 220 words)

        Last summer you attended a language course but you did not work as hard as you were expected to, pay attention during the lessons or behave very well. Now you feel sorry for your actions. Write a letter of apology to the British lecturer. Apologize and explain why you behaved like you did.

        A letter (180 – 230 words)

        Write a letter to your pen friend giving him/her some advice to prepare for English leaving exams. Recommend 5 learning strategies you regularly use and are satisfied with. Don't forget to warn him/her of possible problems in the learning process.
